Buyer beware.

Beware of salesmen making promises.
Most, if not all, areas of business have the rogues. You must know the type: hype, deceptive descriptions, and even downright lies... anything to make the sale and get their bonus.
Citizens Band is no different and, in the days of the CB boom, trickery was rife. All sorts of deception has been used to sell products or bump up repair bills, even manufacturers have been known to get in on the act.
There are many honest dealers and engineers out there, but you should be aware of the trickery used by others, just so they can make a sale.

Methods.
Although the obvious concept here is the salesman fooling the customer, this is not the only way these tricks take place:
Packaging may contain misleading information. This need not be dishonest, just enough to make people misunderstand the facts.
Salesmen, who may not even know the facts. Their job is only to sell.
Advertising is commonly used to spread misleading information. This then gets passed around until, eventually, most people accept it as truth.
Enthusiasts may spread incorrect information. If enough people tell you the same story, then it has to be correct, doesn't it? Some of this may originally come from dealers or manufacturers who then make the sales from the stories.
Experts may appear to endorse a product, but are they really an expert and are they just saying what the company are paying them to say?

Further information.
The purpose of this section is just to provide basic information, in the hope that people may not be fooled by such tactics. For those wanting more technical information to explain why some of the devices are not as claimed, more information is gradually being added to the technical section of this site.
