Internet security.
Danger from your computer.
You should be aware that your computer can give out information without the
user even knowing. Hackers constantly try to get into computers connected to
the Internet, and some may try to place special "spy" software on your system
that will send out your personal data.
Don't be fooled into thinking that hackers and such people are only interested
in certain targets - they constantly scan any computer they can find on the
Internet.
Essential software.
Make sure that your system has a Firewall, up to date virus protection and a
good "spyware" detection system. If cost is a problem, these items can be
obtained free from some Web sites.
Anti-virus software should be updated at least once a month. Some will give out
weekly updates. Some "Spyware" detection software also needs updating at regular
intervals.
Safe Web site lists.
Try to find some safe sites for your children - visit sites, read their child
safety and privacy policies, view their pages, then make a list of good sites.
These good sites could be placed in the "favourites" list on your browser, to
make it easy for your children to find them.
Security settings.
Your system, software and browser should have some security features, which you
can enable. Take the time to look through these options, and set the security to
an appropriate level.
Also, you may be able to block some sites or block certain content types from any
site not on your list of trusted sites. Some firewalls may even be able to block
some adverts and pop-ups.
